Profile: Prof Dr. John Radford

For the past eighteen years, John Radford has specialized in harnessing conflict for sustained organizational success, working in a variety of organizational contexts including commercial, government, education, health, land reform, labour unions and NGOs. Based in Vancouver, British Columbia John is currently consulting in North America and Southern Africa.

As a founder of Transform Consulting International, John continues to focus on assisting leaders to achieve sustainable effectiveness in a globally competitive, rapidly changing environment. His recent co-authoring of Self-Wealth was a natural extension of his work in change as a means to reach a larger audience. This book was born out of his frustration with business literature’s failure to deal with the real personal challenges that entrepreneurs face.

·      He is a core faculty member on the Royal Roads University Masters program in Conflict Analysis and Management,

·      Holds a Chair (Full Professor) in the School of Management Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

·      John has a Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Natal, South Africa.

·      He is a Registered Psychologist with SAMDC (South African Medical and Dental Council) and

·      Professional credentials have been accepted by the College of Psychologists of British Columbia 

John is a certified mediator with Independent Mediation Service of South Africa on the Labour, Commercial, Community and Relationship Building Initiative panels.

·      In 1984, he was amongst the first group of South African mediators to be trained by members of the Federal Mediation Service of America, and the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service of Britain (ACAS).

·      In 1989, John was selected and sponsored by IMSSA, the Tongaat-Hulett Group and Unilever South Africa to receive international training in Deep-rooted Conflict Mediation at:

·       ACAS: Portsmouth, Britain

·       John Hopkins Institute for Peace: New York

·      The Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution: George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. He received ongoing input and mentoring from the head of this institute, Professor James H. Laue, George Mason University, until his death in September, 1993.

John has created international precedent in conflict systems design in the following areas:

·      Relationship Mapping for conflict systems analysis.

·      Designed and facilitated the consultation process for creation of the new national constitution for media-deficient communities in South Africa

·      Worked on the IMSSA team to design the conflict resolution system for the land reform process in South Africa.  This involved integrating the conflict resolution system with the land reform legislative process

·      He was involved in adapting and prototyping the American Relationships by Objectives process to meet the specific demands of the African labour situation. By 1993, John had facilitated more relationship building initiatives in Southern Africa than had been conducted in the USA
